In 1982, radio presenter and music historian Spencer Leigh interviewed 120 band members from the Merseybeat era for a 12-week BBC Radio Merseyside series called ‘Let’s Go Down The Cavern’. Following widespread interest in the series, the radio station repeated the programmes, which were written and compiled by Leigh. And an informative brochure containing the history of the club was published to coincide with the repeats, which started in September 1983 in preparation for the opening of the rebuilt Cavern club in April 1984.
Bob Wooler was interviewed by Spencer Leigh in preparation for the repeat programmes. But Leigh found the venue’s former DJ and compere extremely cagey and hostile, to the extent that he never felt the need to interview him again. Bob insisted that the interview must be used for broadcast only, with his comments expressly not to be used in Leigh’s book version of Let’s Go Down The Cavern.
